The symbol of Avignon.

Construction on the Popes’ palace began in 1935, mainly by two Popes who were avid builders – the austere Benedict XII and his successor Clement VI. The Palais des Papes was set to become the largest Gothic building in all of Europe. A visit to this architectural masterpiece, which includes the private apartments with their fabulous frescoes, is one of Avignon's must-sees.

The ramparts of Avignon are the second longest continuous wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. You can get onto the ramparts via the Rocher des Doms or the Sainte-Anne staircase.
